Most Yorkie and Maltese puppies can be stuck into a tea cup for a cute photo but the truth of the matter is they are just babies and they will grow. Can a one year old or older yorkie or Maltese fit in that tea cup? NO, in fact a Yorkshire Terrier named Big Boss holds the Guinness World records title for smallest dog. Big Boss was given the title in 1995, the yorkie was just 4.7 inches tall at his withers (The highest point of the shoulders, directly behind the neck) and 5.1 inches long (from withers to base of his tail) on his first birthday. So, even Big Boss could not fit in a tea cup when he was full grown. Full grown a Yorkie should be 7 to 9 inches tall at withers and since it should have a nice square body it should also be 7 to 9 inches long the Yorkie should weigh between 2 to 6 pounds. A yorkie that is 3 pounds full grown is not a tea cup it is what the AKC standards states it should be. If more breeders would stick to AKC standards they would not need to deceive the public by calling their Yorkies that are the correct size tea cups and just call the yorkies that are 7 pounds and over too big! Full grown a Maltese should be 7 to 10 inches tall at withers and since it should have a nice square body it should also be 7 to 10 inches long the Maltese should weigh between 3 to 7 pounds. A Maltese that is 4 to 5 pounds full grown is not a tea cup it is what the AKC standards states it should be.
A.K.C. also states what the face of a Maltese and the face of a Yorkie should look like. The Yorkie should have a rather small and flat, not too prominent or round skull, nor should it have too long of a muzzle. The Maltese should have a head in proportion to its body size. the skull should be slightly rounded on top. Low set drop ears that hang close to the head. Eyes very round, dark, and not too far apart. The muzzle is of medium length, fine and tapered but not snippy.
Tea cup, tiny toy and Baby doll face, when referring to a Maltese or Yorkie is pretty much a deception by an unethical backyard breeder. (Backyard breeder: Term used to describe a person who breeds purebred dogs in a casual manner with no particular regard to the breed standard, genetically linked defects or temperament.)
Our Yorkies mature to 3 – 5 pounds and 6 to 8 inches tall.
Our Maltese mature to 3 – 6 pounds and 6 to 9 inches tall.
The American Kennel Club dose not recognize tiny toy, tea cup, or baby doll face when referring to the Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, or for that matter any dog. However, I do get a great deal of request for these items so I have put together a tiny toy, tea cup, and baby doll face for anyone who might be interested in one of them. I do charge a bit higher price for these items because there is such a high demand for them.
